A recent New York Times article reports that sons of divorced parents fare worse than daughters. [view the article here]. According to the study cited, men whose parents divorced before they were 18 were two to three times more likely to seriously consider suicide than their peers:

  • The study explains this as connected to decreased contact with the father, as well as the tendency of boys to internalize feelings of grief.
  • The study verifies that while thoughts of suicide are more common among children of divorce, the percentage of those effected to such a degree represent a minority of children from divorced households.

The article cited does not reflect the opinions of Nassau Guidance & Counseling. Divorce can be difficult not only for those who are parting ways, but for the children, as well. Counseling can help ease the transition for all involved. Our experienced therapists are well-equipped to help you and your family develop the tools to begin to mend and move forward.
