A recent New York Times article reports that sons of divorced parents fare worse than daughters. [view the article here]. According to the study cited, men whose parents divorced before they were 18 were two to three times more likely to seriously consider suicide than their peers:
- The study explains this as connected to decreased contact with the father, as well as the tendency of boys to internalize feelings of grief.
- The study verifies that while thoughts of suicide are more common among children of divorce, the percentage of those effected to such a degree represent a minority of children from divorced households.
The article cited does not reflect the opinions of Nassau Guidance & Counseling. Divorce can be difficult not only for those who are parting ways, but for the children, as well.
