Can economic recession cause male depression? A recent article from TIME says yes. According to the article [which you can read here,] 75% of job losses in the recent recession were lost by men. The men interviewed in a study, described feelings of being depressed, overwhelmed, and weak. Their self-esteem felt diminished by the loss of their job.
- Men are genetically wired and socialized to be “providers.”
- Much of the male identity in our culture is reliant upon job prestige, economic status, and the ability to be the breadwinner for the family.
A job loss or pay cut can leave a man feeling inadequate. There is also the idea that men should “suck it up” and “get over it.” This smothering of male emotion, coupled with the hopelessness of unemployment, is a fertile ground for depression to develop.
Job loss does not only effect our wallets, but our health, as well. If you or someone you love has been struggling in the recent economic downtown, there is help available. A psychotherapist can help you learn to manage your distressing feelings over your financial situation. Call us today at (516) 221-9494 to schedule an appointment.
