Q: How long are therapy sessions?

Standard therapy sessions last 45 - 50 minutes.

Q: How often do therapy sessions occur?

We find that therapy is most effective when sessions are scheduled on a weekly basis.

Q: How long does it take to obtain an appointment?

It is our policy to schedule an appointment in a week or less, as long as your schedule permits.

Q: Is it okay to ask for a change in therapist if I / we are not comfortable with him or her?

Yes. Your therapy will be more effective if you connect with your therapist, so we will gladly make adjustments to ensure that you’re happy.

Q. Do you take insurance?

Yes, we work with most insurance companies. However, even if we are not included in your particular network, we will do our best to incorporate your out-of-network coverage for your maximum allowable benefit.

Q. How much does a session cost if I don’t have insurance coverage?

Although we are a private psychotherapy practice, we do substantially reduce our fees for patients lacking insurance coverage. Our rates are extremely competitive with other private psychotherapy practitioners, and vary based on treatment type and other factors. However, feel free to call us at 516-221-9494, for pricing information specific to your needs.

Q. Once my therapist has been selected, how do I make my first appointment?

Your therapist will contact you – usually within the same day – to schedule your appointment.

Q. How many therapists are part of Nassau Guidance & Counseling?

We currently have 36 specialized psychotherapists, with offices located throughout Long Island, in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Q. Does therapy really work?

Yes! Therapy absolutely works when experienced, caring, licensed therapists work with motivated clients, who are willing to put time, energy, and work into the therapeutic process.

Q. How long does therapy take?

Our clients progress at varying rates, and the duration of their therapy depends upon several factors, such as the number and complexity of their issues; how long their unhealthy patterns have been in place; and their level of motivation and commitment to the healing process.

Q. Don’t I need to be in therapy with a psychiatrist?

Although there are certainly some psychiatrists who provide psychotherapy, a large percentage primarily assess patients for medication needs and management. They frequently work in conjunction with Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Clinical Psychologists (PhDs), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), or Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHCs), who provide the psychotherapy itself.

Q. Isn’t it true that Social Workers only deal with issues surrounding foster care and Social Services?

Absolutely not, even though this is a common misconception! In truth, Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) make up the largest percentage of licensed professionals who provide psychotherapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families.

Q. Isn’t medication all I need to “fix” depression or anxiety?

Because depression and anxiety have biochemical components, symptoms can often be greatly mitigated using antidepressants and / or anti-anxiety medications. However, because medications do not address the emotional aspects or the root causes associated with the symptoms - and may result in unwanted side effects - psychotherapy is also recommended.

The process helps patients identify their underlying issues and begin healing.

"My therapy has given me the insight to make choices ..."

If there was a way to make your life more meaningful and fulfilling, wouldn’t you do it? Well, that’s what counseling is all about.

Since receiving counseling through the Nassau Guidance & Counseling, my relationships have improved; most of all therapy has given me the insight to make better choices in my life.

I highly recommend it for everyone. Life is just too short to live it any other way.
