According to The National Institute for Mental Health, 4% of adults and 9% of children have Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD.) ADHD is characterized by difficulty in sustaining attention or organizing tasks, excessive fidgeting, poor impulse control, and a tendency toward being easily distracted.
In adults, ADHD can manifest as:
- “Zoning out,”.
- Hyper-focusing on rewarding tasks.
- Excessive multitasking.
- Overlooking details.
- A short temper.
- Chronic lateness.
- Trouble staying motivated.
- Poor self-control.
Living with ADHD:
- Can lead to problems at work, school, and in relationships.
- Individuals may report feeling a low sense of self-esteem due to other people characterizing them as unreliable, forgetful, or even insensitive, as well as their own frustration with their limitations.
Although these characteristics may be present, many people with ADHD also report heightened creativity, passion, and nonconventional thinking that enhances their lives in other ways.
By working with a qualified therapist, a person living with ADHD can start developing ways of managing the behaviors that accompany the hyperactivity and difficulty focusing.
