Being an adolescent is hard enough – and parenting one can be even harder. It can be difficult for a parent to tell the difference between normal teen behavior and a legitimate mental health concern. A study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) indicates that teens are extremely prone to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD.) Over 20% of teens experience an emotional problem so severe that it impairs their ability to function. [You can read the full article here.]

It can be terrifying for parents who are trying to help a child they feel might be struggling with anxiety, depression, or other issues. What’s more, the study states that a startling 40% of those interviewed showed enough symptoms to qualify the diagnosis of a secondary disorder. For parents of a child suffering from depression, anxiety, mood disorder, or other issues, therapy can help both the parent and the adolescent to heal. Individual therapy can start to help the child address the root causes of their symptoms, and reduce the behaviors that may be making school, family life, and their own personal life difficult. Family therapy can help the whole family come together to move forward to a healthier, happier place.

Nassau Guidance and Counseling offers therapy to both adolescents and their families who are struggling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Contact us today at (516) 221-9494 for more information about setting up an appointment at one of our 34 locations in New York.

More Client Testimonials

"My experience with Nassau Guidance has been a powerfully positive experience. Working with Kathleen Dwyer Blair has transformed me and helped me on the path of finding out who I really am. When I entered therapy, my life revolved around fear. I was paralyzed. With compassion and understanding, Kathleen encouraged me to listen to myself, to think for myself, to trust in myself. Now my life revolves around love and truth. So many new and wonderful doors have opened for me that I never dreamed could be possible. I am not the same person that entered therapy. My journey is still evolving but I have learned to appreciate each day instead of dreading the days. I truly believe that Kathleen is my Guardian Angel."
