My great-grandmother had a saying: “Sometimes, you need to take the milk money and buy roses.”

With all the responsibilities we have - work, school, family, community obligations - it’s hard to find even a moment for ourselves. The To Do list keeps getting longer and longer, and the free time we do have is spent worrying about everything we still have to do. When our minds are constantly in “to-do mode,” we end up running ourselves ragged. Life becomes all work, and the joy is drowned out by exhaustion.

This week’s tip is simple: treat yourself to something you enjoy. Indulge in a long bath. Eat that chocolate chip cookie. Spend an hour reading a book in your favorite chair instead of trying to get ahead on your To Do list.

Allowing yourself a little bit of pleasure without the guilt is important to balance the demands of daily life. Responsibly indulging is self-care; it recharges, refreshes, and helps us get through all we have to do with a little more joy.

Remember, these exercises do not stand in for the help of a licensed professional, and are not intended to be used in place of professional treatment. If you or someone who care about is experiencing a difficult emotional state, Nassau Guidance and Counseling can assist you in finding peace.

How many of us feel like we are on a swing set of thought, one that pulls us back into memories of our past, then forward into thoughts of the future? All our time is spent thinking of what was or could be. This narrow path leaves one feeling trapped. On this swing set, you don’t have the room to be here in the present.

In light of recent news that Senator Scott Brown (R-Massachusetts) was sexually abused as a boy, attention has been directed to the prevalence of sexual violence perpetrated against men. Male survivors of sexual abuse are often overlooked, but the effects of abuse can be devastating and long-term.

Weekend Reading: Talk to Me Like I'm Someone You Love
The connection between two individuals can be one of the most beautiful experiences any human can have. It can also be one of the most confusing. Few of us can claim to have never stumbled while maneuvering the often complicated paths of communication, trust, understanding, mutual love, and commitment alongside our partners. With all the potential to lose direction, it’s enough to make anyone wish for some kind of roadmap.

Did You Know?

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, 26.2% of Americans 18 and older suffer from a diagnosable mental health issue in a given year. That amounts to nearly 57.7 million people - or 1 in 4 Americans annually

Mental health concerns are common, and can be addressed with the help of a licensed professional. If you or someone you love is suffering, there is hope. Nassau Guidance and Counseling has been working with experienced therapists since 1960 to provide those suffering from emotional turmoil a path to healing. Please contact us at (516) 221-9494, and take that first step towards progress.

More Client Testimonials

"My therapist truly cares for the well-being of her clients ... My therapist is a uniquely gifted counselor, attuned and present for each session; always attentive, providing a safe, warm, and nurturing environment. [One of my therapist's gifts] is the ability to allow a person to be heard, while providing gentle and illuminating guidance. My therapist employs a vast knowledge of many different techniques, and blends them beautifully to assist a client to learn, embrace, and grow in the moment. It has been over 18 months since I have seen my therapist on a regular basis, and the many insights shared during our work together are still so clear to me. I often reflect on how I respond to many of life’s challenges today versus how I would have reacted in years past I hear my therapist's words at crucial times and feel empowered to make the choice that is best for me. Some of the many benefits I have realized as a direct result of my work with a therapist include: - Having the confidence to express my feelings and needs at the appropriate time, in a calm, loving, and respectful way, rather than suppressing them until an outburst filled with anger and resentment would erupt. - Understanding when I felt hurt that the current event was [frequently] a “trigger” for some past wounds that were never properly felt and healed. Enjoying healthier, better-grounded relationships with family members and friends. - Appreciating my feelings for what they are, rather than trying to rationalize and file them away. - Respecting myself and knowing what behaviors I would accept from others and what behaviors I would not. - Effectively communicating and setting healthy boundaries. My therapist truly cares for the well-being of her clients. If you are considering counseling and are serious about changing your life for the better, you owe it to yourself to [contact Nassau Guidance and Counseling."
