It's 2 AM, and despite your best intentions, you can’t seem to fall asleep. You lay awake for hours, your mind wide-awake even though you feel exhausted. The red digits on the alarm clock show that your opportunity to rest is dwindling fast – and yet time seems to be dragging by. You’re frustrated, cranky, and downright tired. Still, it doesn’t seem like sleep is coming anytime soon.

If the story above is one you relate to, then you might be familiar with the draining effects of insomnia.

Many people identify eating disorders with the thin and famous, and believe that symptoms are visible and easy to identify. However, many with eating disorders suffer in secret, and disordered eating appears in many forms – as starvation, binging, purging, and even excessive exercise. This week, we’ll take a look at the many forms of disordered eating, and how eating disorders (EDs) are more than what meets the eye.

Myth of the Week: eating disorders are always visible, and easy to detect.

Finding out that a partner has been unfaithful can be a heartbreaking experience. Little else leaves us feeling so betrayed, abandoned, wounded, confused, and mistrustful. A communications professor of mine once said that more people are afraid of public speaking than they are of death. For those who suffer from social anxiety or social phobia, the fear of speaking, eating, or even being present in a social setting can be a source of great discomfort. Luckily, recent research shows that psychotherapy has a notable effect of social anxiety. In fact, it’s so significant that the results appear on pictures of the brain.

Weekend Reading: Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay by Mira Kirshenbaum

It’s one of the hardest questions you can face in a relationship: Should I stay, or should I go?

Sometimes, it feels like there are too many unpleasant feelings to stay in a relationship. There may be tension, or bitterness, or a severe break in communication. One or both partners may feel lonely, unhappy, and frustrated. However, oftentimes the good isn’t entirely gone – there are still moments of laughter and love that remind you why you’re still holding on.

This relationship ambivalence is enough to make anyone feel exhausted and confused. Luckily, Mira Kirshenbaum’s Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay offers some guidelines to start your search for answers.

More Client Testimonials

"My experience with Nassau Guidance has been a powerfully positive experience. Working with my therapist has transformed me and helped me on the path of finding out who I really am. When I entered therapy, my life revolved around fear. I was paralyzed. With compassion and understanding, she encouraged me to listen to myself, to think for myself, to trust in myself. Now my life revolves around love and truth. So many new and wonderful doors have opened for me that I never dreamed could be possible. I am not the same person that entered therapy. My journey is still evolving but I have learned to appreciate each day instead of dreading the days. I truly believe that my therapist is my Guardian Angel. "
