With the first meeting for Nassau Guidance's new group for adolescent boys just around the corner, we've been putting a lot of thought into just how much work the parenting of adolescents can be. The teen years can be especially trying. Add to that the high risk for developing issues like depression and anxiety (which we reported on here,) and it's no wonder so many parents of teens struggle. Below are 7 tips for easing this time for both you and your teen.

Learning to Tolerate Vulnerability

"When we were children, we used to think that when we were grown-up we would no longer be vulnerable. But to grow up is to accept vulnerability."

The above quote is by Madeleine L'Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time -- and, in my opinion, a woman who really knows what she's talking about. Vulnerability is one of the strongest factors at play in all of us. It leads us into love, fear, sorrow -- even hate. We'll do anything to avoid feeling exposed. But part of being an adult - and having mature relationships - is learning to tolerate vulnerability.

The depressing divorce rate in New York today is enough to make many soon-to-be-wed couples feel a little cold in the feet. When fifty percent of all marriages fail, the prospect of walking down that aisle becomes even more intimidating. Now might be the best time to consider couples counseling. Research shows that couples benefit significantly from premarital counseling. Below are some of the reasons why.

When I see a person who cares for their elderly or sick family member, I always ask myself: How do they set boundaries and find time to take care of themselves? Finding that balance can be extremely difficult, but is necessary for the health and wellbeing of a caretaker.

Safety is something we often overlook the importance of until we are in a situation in which we no longer are safe. For children who are sexually abused, the importance of safety is inescapable. As these children become adults, they often live with a feeling of not being safe for years or decades after the abuse ends.

More Client Testimonials

"My therapy was the best thing I ever did for myself. It was an amazing feeling to know that someone would take the time to listen to me and not judge me on my thoughts and feelings. I always felt I was unimportant and my feelings were disregarded, especially as a child. Keeping everything inside made it all seem so big and scary. Once I started speaking things out, I began to be free of things like depression and fear. My feelings were validated. I have gained self-esteem that I never had and self-confidence to do things I couldn’t ever imagine doing. I believe that everyone has hurts inside that they bury, but they don’t go away. In therapy, you can start the process of being healed and freed from them."
