According to experts, hoarding is a psychological condition whose sufferers excessively acquire and form unhealthy attachment to objects - so much so that they find it nearly impossible to part with anything, even items that may seem to have little or no value.

And even though hoarding has garnered a lot of attention in the recent past due to television shows and widespread magazine, newspaper, and online articles, many people still view hoarding as a life choice instead of the serious psychological condition that it is. The good news, however, is that this attention has also meant that more and more people are wisely seeking help for themselves or someone they love.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a diagnosis about which there is much written. Often this condition is depicted in its most extreme circumstances, such as constant checking, repeated hand washing, or a preference to all things symmetrical or color-coded.

However, more prevalent are the less extreme obsessive-compulsive tendencies that many people experience. Although less severe, many people without a diagnosis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder find that they are plagued with obsessive thinking or compulsive actions that interfere with their quality of life and serenity.

In a nutshell, a boundary says “this is how close you can come to me—physically, emotionally, spiritually, informationally, sexually, financially…” and so on. Then, what is a “limit?” Limits are less known by more people than boundaries, and even professionals confuse boundaries with limits, if they even discuss them with their clients at all. There is a huge important difference, and knowing it will reduce anger, rage, and regression* significantly.

Grand parent with grand children

Most people think fairy tales are only for children. If one looks more closely, you will find fairy-tales, fables and stories from quite a few cultures that are for adolescents, young adults, middle-aged folks and even elders. The one I am about to tell you is about many things but specifically about the need to grieve the past so the present and future can be fully inhabited and celebrated.

"If there was a way to make your life more meaningful and fulfilling, wouldn’t you do it? Well, that’s what counseling is all about. Since I’ve been receiving counseling through the Nassau Guidance and Counseling Center, my therapist and I have been working towards that very goal. My relationships have improved, but most of all therapy has given me the insight to make better choices in my life. I highly recommend it for everyone. Life is just too short to live it any other way."
